Monthly Reading Wrap Ups, Reading Updates

Reading Wrap Up – January 2023

January didn’t kick off 2023 with the great reading month I was hoping for. I read 4 books and did enjoy them. Hopefully there are better books and reading to come in 2023.

The Books

The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna

4 stars – Full Review

This was a great book to kickoff the year. I had such a good time with this one that I described as The House in the Cerulean Sea as told by the Hallmark Channel. That is, until a random and totally unnecessary sex scene was inserted. It was so out of place, it threw me off and took me out of the story. So close to a 5 star but one chapter ruined it.

A Kind of Spark by Elle McNicoll

4 stars

I picked this up to fulfill the mentally or physically disabled prompt from my TBR card draws. I did enjoy it but wish there had been more to the story than just talking about how she was autistic. I think I would have enjoyed this author’s fantasy series more.

Assassin’s Quest by Robin Hobb

3 stars

Then I finished the Farseer Trilogy. Unfortunately, this was my least favorite book in the series. Way too much traveling and way too little plot. Still not bad and I love these characters. I will be continuing in the Realm of the Elderlings but glad this one is done.

Fireborne by Rosaria Munda

4 stars – Full Review

Then I started the Aurelian Cycle trilogy with Fireborne. I really enjoyed this one and definitely plan to continue.

February Plans

TBR Cards

I’m picking from my TBR Cards from Bowties and Books again and picked these two.

The Booktube Card – Read a booktuber’s recommendation

This is as easy one and I have several options. I’m thinking Leviathan Wakes, Shadow of the Gods, or Senlin Ascends but I’m going to mood read my pick. I find so many books on booktube, most of them would fit.

Toni Morrison – Literary fiction or nonfiction by a deceased BIPOC author

I’m using this to get out of my comfort zone but this is too far. I really hate literary fiction and most nonfiction. I haven’t read Toni Morrison since high school and it was not my thing. So I opted for my caveat that let’s me pick two to replace this one.

And things did not improve.

Senior – Elder Protagonist Age 60+

This one is also pretty tricky but I can make it work. I’m thinking a reread of Matchmaking for Beginners, Blix would definitely qualify. This is a little bit of a cheat because I’ve already read it but it fills the prompt and I love it. Alternatively, I might pick up A Man Named Ove. It says he’s almost 60 and I do have an interest in it. We’ll see how I’m feeling

Get Out – Featuring your greatest fear

Going for like an actual thing like the spider on the card, my biggest fear is sharks. They freak me out and make me not really like the ocean. Now, not the easiest to find a book with sharks that I want to read. However, two of the three Temeraire books I’ve read have had sharks. No guarantees the next one will but I think it’s a good enough shot that I’m going to count it.

23 Books for 2023

I did start-off well with this one and I’ve read two of my 23 in 2023 books! I marked them below. Since I’m letting myself read multiple books from any of these series to meet the 23 book goal, I’m using numbers to check them off. The number is how many I’ve read so far. Green means there are more books to read. I’ll add a color if I finish any of these series but that will take some time. Temeraire, Shadow of the Gods, and Senlin Ascends are all on this list so likely will be using those to complete the cards and check these off. Plus I’m super excited for those.

Tentative TBR

So that leaves me with a lot of books plus the read I’m carrying over from January and others I just want to read. Hopefully it will be a great month! Here’s some of the books I think I’ll be reading.

Happy Reading!
