WWW Wednesday – January 4, 2023

Happy Wednesday! After missing a few weeks over the holidays, I’m back to participating in this fun weekly blog.  If you’re unfamiliar with WWW Wednesday, it’s a weekly blog meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words. The three W’s are simple:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you think you’ll read next?

Current Reads

I was feeling ambitious and decided to pick up Assassin’s Quest by Robin Hobb. This is an 800 page monster but I have really enjoyed the first two books in this trilogy and I’m excited to see how it ends. I started Monday night and I’m about 100 pages in, hopefully this isn’t my current read still next WWW but we’ll see how it goes.

Recently Finished

I finished two books this week. My last book of 2022 was Aurora Burning by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. This is the second book in the Aurora Cycle. I gave the first book 5 stars but gave this one 4. It still had a lot of things I liked but the first maybe two-thirds of the book, I was not really interested. Eventually, I got interested and the end was awesome but it just took too long for the plot to get interesting. I will definitely be picking up the last book to figure out how this ends.

Then my first book of 2023 was The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna. I really thought I’d be shouting from the rooftops about how much I loved this book and I was at about the halfway point. But in the beginning of the book, I thought it was weird the amount of cursing the author included. And then it went beyond that to a random sex scene that was totally unnecessary. I have no problem with cursing in a book (my favorite book is The Martian which literally opens with profanity) or smut but they didn’t fit with the vibes of this book, it felt forced and awkward and totally took me out of the story. I just couldn’t give it 5 stars. I love everything about this book except that one chapter. I’d be tempted to reread it and skip that chapter entirely. Before that scene, I had described this book as The House in the Cerulean Sea as told by The Hallmark Channel. No smut belongs in that and it really felt like an editor told the author to add some. So sadly, 4 stars but I did still have a great time for 95% of the book.

Up Next

After a monster epic fantasy, I’m going to need something light and fun. I’m thinking it will be Homicide and Halo-Halo by Mia P. Manansala.
