Reading Updates

Book Series I’m Reading – October 2022

I done two previous updates on the series I’m reading and it’s so much fun to write those posts and a great reminder of what series I’ve been neglecting. My June post covered the first half of 2022 and was way too long so trying quarterly this go around.

Stats

Before jumping into the books, here are some fun stats:

  • I’ve read 30 books since the post in June
  • Of those, 50% have been a part of a series
  • Not counting rereads:
    • I’ve started 8 new series
    • I finished 1 series
    • I continued reading 5 series
  • I have 26 series that I’m currently reading
    • 10 of these I am up-to-date and waiting on the next book to be released

Series I’ve Started

Let’s start out with the new series I’ve started since mid-June.

Starlight’s Shadow by Jessie Mihalik

Sci-fi romance set in space.

Series Status: planned trilogy, 2 books released, 3rd book planned in 2023

My Status: read 2 of 2 released

Plan to continue. I had a lot of fun with this and gave both books 4 stars. I’ll probably pick up the next book when it is released.

Finlay Donovan by Elle Cosimano

Mystery series about a writer who is accidentally hired to murder a woman’s husband.

Series Status: completed trilogy

My Status: Read 1 of 3

Plan to continue. This was really fun although I didn’t love it. I do plan to continue and have the second book from the library already but have some other priorities.

The Aurora Cycle by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

YA sci-fi series told in multi-media format.

Series Status: Completed trilogy

My Status: Read 1 of 3

I plan to continue. I loved the first book, it was so much fun. I will absolutely continue and have the second book, just waiting to be in the right mood.

Greatcoats by Sebastian de Castell

Adult fantasy series about the fallen Greatcoats.

Series Status: completed, 4 books

My Status: Read 1 of 4

I plan to continue. Another fun series by de Castell. This wasn’t at all what I was expecting but the characters were awesome.

Twin Crowns by Catherine Doyle and Katherine Webber

YA fantasy series about twin princesses who were split apart at birth.

Series Status: 1st book released in 2022, 2nd to be released in 2023

My Status: Read 1 of 1 released

I plan to continue. I really enjoyed this book although one of the twins annoyed me. I do plan to pick up the next book when it is released.

Tita Rosie’s Kitchen Mysteries by Mia P. Manansala

Adult cozy mystery series.

Series Status: completed trilogy

My Status: Read 1 of 3

I plan to continue. I was so surprised by this book. I tried it for something different and really liked it. I plan to read the next one when I need another change of pace, maybe a readathon.

The Burnished City by Davinia Evans

New fantasy series dealing with alchemy.

Series Status: first book released in 2022, unknown series length

My Status: Read 1 of 1 released

Series DNF’d. I didn’t like this one. It lacked world building and was really confusing. I will definitely not be continuing.

The Time Trials by Jon McConnell and Dayna McConnell

YA sci-fi series about a secret competition where a team of teenagers travels in time to famous historic events to complete challenges.

Series Status: 2nd book released in 2022, unknown series length

My Status: Read 1 of 2 released

I plan to continue. This book is such a good idea and I’m still thinking about it weeks later. I will definitely continue.

Series I Finished

Not counting rereads, I finished one series. The Extraordinaries series by TJ Klune was so much fun. The second book was by far my favorite but I gave them all 4 stars. It so great to see an LGBTQ+ YA book that isn’t really about that as well as one with such great parent figures. I love that this book exists for the target audience.

Series I Continued

There are 4 series that I started before June 2022 that I have made progress in but haven’t finished yet.

  • American Royals by Katharine McGee
    • 3rd book released in 2022, unknown series length
    • I’ve read 3 of 3 released, 1 since June
    • These are just fun, I’ll keep reading
  • Monk and Robot by Becky Chambers
    • 2nd book released in 2022, unknown series length
    • I’ve read both released books, 1 since June
    • These are so well done and thought-out, I love Mosscap
  • Spellslinger by Sebastien de Castell
    • Completed series of 6 books
    • I’ve read 3 of 6, 1 since June
    • These are really fun and I will continue picking one up every few months
  • Supernatural Investigations by BB Alston
    • 2nd book released in 2022, next book planned in 2023, unknown series length
    • I’ve read both released books, the 2nd in since June
    • I love Amari and can’t wait for the next one

Series I Haven’t Continued but Want To

And my last category is series that I haven’t touched in the last 3 months but do intend to keep reading. A lot of these are because the next book isn’t out yet but some I just haven’t been in the mood for.

  • Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko – I really liked the first book and then never picked up the second one. I still plan to although I think I’ll need to reread the first one.
  • The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes – I haven’t been in the right mood for this one but do still plan to read book 2 and now the final book is out so might be a good time to do it.
  • Scythe by Neal Shusterman – I read the first book and loved it and then just never continued. I still plan to though.
  • Captive Prince by CS Pacat – I’ve only read the first book in this trilogy but I own the whole thing and I liked it so I plan to continue at some point.
  • The Three Body Problem by Cixin Liu– I actually have the second book out from the library but I’m scared of the big heavy science sci-fi. I’ll be brave eventually.
  • Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao – I can’t believe I need to wait until 2023 for the second book, this wait is killing me.
  • The Last Binding by Freya Marske – Book 2 of this trilogy will be published in November.
  • A Light in the Sky by Shina Reynolds – This is still listed as a series on Goodreads but no other books are listed. I’m hoping there will eventually be a sequel.
  • The Drowning Empire by Andrea Stewart – I have some issues with this series but the 3rd book is supposed to be published in 2023 and I need to find out what happens with Mephi.
  • Castles in Their Bones by Laura Sebastian – This is a planned trilogy and book 2 finally has a cover and will be released next year. I’m so excited.
  • Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb – I’ve read 2 books of the 16 book series. I have the 3rd book but haven’t picked it up yet.
  • The Book of Tea by Judy I Lin – The second book in this duology was released in August, I plan to pick it up by the end of the year.
  • Temeraire by Naomi Novik – I recently picked up book 3 of this 9 book series.
  • Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor – I have book 2 from the library but just haven’t picked it up yet.
  • Defy the Night by Brigid Kemmerer – I got book 2 from the library today and I couldn’t be more excited. It will definitely be read in the next couple weeks, maybe with a book 1 reread.

Wow, that’s a long list, thanks for reading!
