Book Series I’m Reading

Hello and welcome! Back in January, I wrote a post about all of the book series I started in 2021. I’ve gone back and looked through that post a few times when I’m trying to decide what to read so I decided I wanted to do it again for the first half of 2022 (ish). There are so many books on here, I might need to do this more often. As a largely fantasy reader, so many of the books I pick up are series and I’m really bad at flagging the next book in a series as “want to read” in Goodreads so this is a nice place to come and remind myself. So here it goes….

Stats

Before jumping into the books, here are some fun stats:

  • I’ve read 52 books so far in 2022
  • Of those, 65% have been a part of a series
  • Not counting rereads:
    • I’ve started 12 new series
    • I finished 4 series
    • I continued reading 8 series
  • I have 27 series that I’m currently reading
    • 14 of these I am up-to-date and waiting on the next book to be released

Series I’ve Started

Let’s start out with the new series I’ve started in 2022.

Malice by Heather Walter

Sapphic Sleeping Beauty retelling told from Maleficient’s perspective.

Series Status: completed duology

My Status: complete, read 2 of 2

Already finished. I really enjoyed the first book and gave it 4 stars. I then immediately requested the second book on NetGalley and actually got it. The second book is getting mixed reviews but I actually enjoyed it more. Overall, a really good duology.

Castles in Their Bones by Laura Sebastian

YA fantasy series about princess triplets sent to marry princes/kings of nearby kingdoms and help destroy the kingdoms from within.

Series Status: 1st book released in 2022, 2nd to be released in 2023, expected trilogy

My Status: Read 1 of 1 released

I can’t wait to continue. I loved this first book and I’m anxiously awaiting the next one. This was such a fun read.

Realm of the Elderings / The Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb

Adult high fantasy about the king-in-waiting’s bastard, Fitz.

Series Status: Complete, 16 primary works in this world across 5 smaller series

My Status: Read 2 of 16 (2 of 3 in Farseer Trilogy)

I plan to continue. I have really enjoyed the first two books in this series and gave them each 4 stars. They’re pretty dense fantasy and a little slow to read so I’ll be spreading them out but definitely will continue. I recently requested the 3rd book which will finish out the first trilogy from the library.

The Book of Tea Duology by Judy I. Lin

YA fantasy series about a magical tea competition.

Series Status: 1st book released in 2022, 2nd to be released in August 2022

My Status: Read 1 of 1 released

I plan to continue. The world in this series is as beautiful as the cover. I loved learning about the tea magic and seeing the world unfold. It got too much into the politics and dropped the competition for a good chunk which was disappointing but I still enjoyed my time and will be reaching for the next one once it’s released.

The Ivory Key Duology by Akshaya Raman

YA fantasy series about a group of royal siblings.

Series Status: 1st book released in 2022, 2nd to be released in 2023

My Status: Read 1 of 1 released

Series DNF’d. This book read incredibly young and was not well executed. I will not be continuing.

Temeraire by Naomi Novik

Adult fantasy series retelling the Napoleonic Wars but with dragons.

Series Status: completed series with 9 primary works

My Status: Read 2 of 9

I plan to continue. I was so surprised by the first book in this series and really enjoyed it. I totally fell in love with Temeraire, he’s such a cute character. The second book was a little slow but I definitely plan to continue and already have book 3 from the library.

Tales of Inthya by Effie Calvin

Fantasy series about a princess sent to marry a prince in a nearby kingdom only he dies along the way so she marries the princess.

Series Status: completed series with 5 books

My Status: Read 1 of 5

Series DNF’d. I liked the idea of this book but the novella format just didn’t work. The author tried to do too much in the short book and I just didn’t care about any of it.

Satoko and Nada by Yupechika

YA manga series about two girls who are Saudi Arabian and Japanese.

Series Status: completed series with 4 volumes

My Status: Read 1 of 4

Series DNF’d. This was my first manga but maybe it was the format but this just wasn’t a cohesive story. I felt like I was reading comic strips from the paper all bound together. I didn’t like it.

March by John Lewis

Nonfiction graphic novel series about the Civil Right Movement.

Series Status: completed series of 3 volumes

My Status: Read 3 of 3

Already finished. I really enjoyed this series and I learned quite a bit. My only issue was the artwork that I had a hard time distinguishing people which is crazy since a lot of them I know what they looked like in real life.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

YA fantasy series about a girl who was raised by monsters.

Series Status: completed trilogy

My Status: Read 1 of 3

I plan to continue. I totally loved the beginning of the first book and then the end just didn’t work for me. I still gave it 4 stars and plan to continue but I didn’t rush out to get the next one.

Defy the Night by Brigid Kemmerer

YA fantasy series about a kingdom on the brink of rebellion.

Series Status: 1st book released in 2021, 2nd to be released in 2022, unknown series length

My Status: Read 1 of 1 released

I can’t wait to continue. I was so surprised by this book. I totally loved it. It’s incredibly fast-paced and didn’t remind me really of any other books. I can’t wait for the next one to be released.

Feverwake Duology by Victoria Lee

YA fantasy/sci-fi/dystopian about a future U.S. where a magical virus either kills you or gives you powers.

Series Status: completed duology

My Status: Read 1 of 2

I don’t think I’ll continue. I just finished this one and haven’t totally decided but I think I’m done. I loved the idea of this story way more than the story itself. The writing was really choppy and never got invested in the story.

Series I Finished

Not counting the series I started and finished, I have finished reading only 2 series. The Cassidy Blake Series by Victoria Schwab is a middle grade series about a girl who can see and hunt ghosts and travels around the world with her parents. I gave these 3 or 4 stars, they were ok but would have scared me to death when I was the target audience age.

I also finished Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo. I didn’t particularly like this series and really don’t get the hype. I probably would have given up if I hadn’t heard Six of Crows is better. I plan to start that one soon and really hope it was worth pushing through this initial trilogy.

Series I Continued

There are 8 series that I started before 2022 that I have made progress in but haven’t finished yet.

  • Saga by Brian K Vaughn and Fiona Staples
    • 9 volumes released, volume 10 expected in 2022
    • I’ve read 7 of 9 released, 4 of those I read in 2022
    • I enjoy but don’t love this series, I’ll keep reading
  • Heartstopper by Alice Oseman
    • 4 volumes released, 5th and final volume expected in 2023
    • I’ve read all 4 released volumes, volume 4 for the first time in 2022
    • I really enjoy these and loved the last one, I can’t wait to see how it ends
  • Between Earth and Sky by Rebecca Roanhorse
    • 2nd book released in 2022, unknown series length
    • I’ve read both released books, book 2 for the first time in 2022
    • I love this world and can’t wait to continue
  • Wayward Children Series by Seanan McGuire
    • 7 books released, 10 books expected
    • I’ve read 5 of 7 released, 1 in 2022
    • This series is not my favorite but for some reason I keep reading
  • Spellslinger by Sebastien de Castell
    • Completed series of 6 books
    • I’ve read 2 of 6, 1 in 2022
    • These are really fun, I have the 3rd book out from the library and will continue soon
  • Nevermoor by Jessica Townsend
    • 3 books released and book 4 expected in 2023, unknown series length
    • I’ve read 2 of 3 released, 1 in 2022
    • I actually liked the 2nd book more than the 1st, I plan to continue
  • A Stitch in Time by Kelley Armstrong
    • 2 books released, 3rd and final book expected in 2022
    • I’ve read both released books, the 2nd in 2022
    • I love this series and have given both 5 stars, I can’t wait for the next one
  • Meant to Be by Multiple Authors
    • 2nd book released in 2022, unknown series length
    • I’ve read both released books, the 2nd in 2022
    • I really enjoyed the first book but the second not as much. I’m sure I’ll keep picking these up though, it’s such a fun idea.

Series I Haven’t Continued but Want To

And my last category is series that I haven’t touched in the last 6 months but do intend to keep reading. A lot of these are because the next book isn’t out yet but some I just haven’t been in the mood for.

  • Supernatural Investigations by BB Alston – My hold is already in for book #2 which will be released in August
  • The Extraordinaries by TJ Klune – I’m very excited for the last book in this trilogy to be published in July.
  • American Royals by Katharine McGee – I’m waiting for my hold to come in on the 3rd book which was just released at the end of May.
  • Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko – I really liked the first book and then never picked up the second one. I still plan to although I think I’ll need to reread the first one.
  • The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes – I haven’t been in the right mood for this one but do still plan to read book 2.
  • Scythe by Neal Shusterman – I read the first book and loved it and then just never continued. I still plan to though.
  • Captive Prince by CS Pacat – I’ve only read the first book in this trilogy but I own the whole thing and I liked it so I plan to continue at some point.
  • The Three Body Problem by Cixin Liu– I actually have the second book out from the library but I’m scared of the big heavy science sci-fi. I’ll be brave eventually.
  • Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao – I can’t believe I need to wait until 2023 for the second book, this wait is killing me.
  • Monk and Robot by Becky Chambers – Book 2 is expected to be published in July and I’ll definitely be picking it up.
  • The Last Binding by Freya Marske – Book 2 of this trilogy will be published in November.
  • A Light in the Sky by Shina Reynolds – This is still listed as a series on Goodreads but no other books are listed. I’m hoping there will eventually be a sequel.
  • The Drowning Empire by Andrea Stewart – I have some issues with this series but the 3rd book is supposed to be published in 2023 and I need to find out what happens with Mephi.

Wow, that’s a long list. I think doing this more often is probably a good call. But for now, thanks for reading!
