WWW Wednesday – April 6, 2022

Happy Wednesday! If you’re unfamiliar with WWW Wednesday, it’s a weekly blog meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words. The three W’s are simple:

  • What are you currently reading?
  • What did you recently finish reading?
  • What do you think you’ll read next?

Current Reads

Wow, these covers look really similar now that I’m seeing them side by side….

This week I accidentally started a 9 book epic fantasy series…oops. To explain, I’m participating in Realmathon and in looking at others TBRs, I came across His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik. Now, I absolutely hated A Deadly Education by Novik and DNF’d it after about 50 pages. But prompts for this readathon include a second chance author, military fantasy and dragons. I couldn’t pass it up and decided to give this one a chance on a total whim. I’m a little over halfway through and totally loving it. Temeraire is fantastic and everything I hated about A Deadly Education is just gone. I’m not sure what Novik’s deal is because these books seriously read like they’re from different authors. But I’m totally invested and already looking towards book 2. So yes, apparently I’m finding myself starting yet another series.

I am technically still working on my reread of Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins but I haven’t read any of it recently, instead picking up my books for readathons. I’ll come back to it when I’m starting to get slumpy again, that’s what comfort rereads are for.

Recently Finished

My reading streak continues with finishing two books in the last week. I’m super excited for Realmathon so hoping I can keep up this pace. All I’ve wanted to do lately is read but stupid work keeps getting in the way.

Woohoo! I did it! I finally finished The Shadow and Bone Trilogy with Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo. I ended up giving this 4 stars, mostly because it was better than I expected. I liked the conclusion despite not loving the trilogy. I powered through to get to Six of Crows (which better be as good as everyone says) but I actually thought this one was pretty good.

Then I picked up my ARC of Misrule by Heather Walter which is the conclusion of the Malice duology. I absolutely loved this. I really enjoyed the first one and gave it 4 stars but this one totally blew me away and I gave it 5 stars. It was not at all what I was expecting but I love where the author took this story and got totally sucked in. I read the almost 500 pages in two days and couldn’t put it down. You can read my full review here. If you haven’t read Malice, it’s a sapphic Sleeping Beauty retelling from Maleficent’s perspective and it totally delivers on that awesome premise, turning the fairy tale you know completely on its head. I highly recommend this duology if you’re a fan of feminist or twisted retellings, it’s an awesome ride.

Up Next

This weekend is the 48-hour readathon for Realmathon where books are worth extra points. So I have a bunch of novellas and graphic novels lined up for a cozy reading weekend with the pups. I won’t get to all of these but here are my options.
