Series I Started in 2021

In 2021, I started a lot of series, way more than I finished. Some of these I have no intension of continuing, some I can’t wait to continue and some I might get to but I’m not sure. Here’s a look back of every series I started in 2021 and my general thoughts and plans to continue.

Between Earth and Sky by Rebecca Roanhorse

Adult fantasy series based in a pre-Comlumbian Americas full of prophecies, politics and intrigue.

Series Status: 1st book released in 2021, 2nd to be released in 2022, unknown series length

My Status: Read 1 of 1 released

I can’t wait to continue. I loved this first book and I’m anxiously awaiting the next one. It was so unique and well done, a really accessible adult fantasy.

Nevermoor by Jessica Townsend

Middle grade fantasy series following a cursed child who is set to die until she is whisked away into a magical world.

Series Status: 3 books released, 4th to be released in 2022, unknown series length

My Status: Read 1 of 3 released

I plan to continue. I really enjoyed this one even if I didn’t love it as much as everyone else seems to. I thought it was a little rushed but gave it 4 stars. I recently picked up the 2nd book from the library and plan to continue soon.

Ash Princess by Laura Sebastian

YA fantasy trilogy following the daughter of the queen who was murdered who now lives at court with her mother’s usurpers.

Series Status: completed trilogy

My Status: Read 1 of 3

Series DNF’d. This first book was fine, really trope-y old school YA fantasy. I didn’t dislike it and am actually currently reading the new series by this author but I haven’t picked up book 2 and at this point, I don’t plan to.

American Royals by Katharine McGee

New adult series following the college-age children of the King of the US, a descendent of George Washington.

Series Status: 2 books released, 3rd to be released in 2022, unknown series length

My Status: Read 2 of 2 released

I plan to continue. These books are so much fun. I thought it was a duology but I was excited to see a third book is planned.

Wayward Children by Seanan McGuire

Series of fantasy novellas following portal fantasy stories of children.

Series Status: 7 books released, 10 books total expected

My Status: Read 4 of 7 released

I plan to continue. I really loved the first book in this series and I’ve been mixed on the others. I think it’s the novella format, they just skip over stuff I want to know. I still keep picking them up though and will keep reading.

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

YA fantasy trilogy in a a Russia-inspired world.

Series Status: complete series

My Status: Read 2 of 3

I plan to continue. I’m not the biggest fan of this trilogy but they’re easy to read and I want to finish and then read Six of Crows which I’ve heard is better.

The Extraordinaries by TJ Klune

YA trilogy following a gay teenage boy with ADHD who is obsessed with Extraordinaries, the real superheroes in this world.

Series Status: 2 books released, 3rd and final to be released in 2022

My Status: Read 2 of 2 released

I can’t wait to continue. I love these books. The characters are great and they’re so funny.

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

YA thriller/mystery trilogy about a girl who mysteriously inherits a fortune and must know live in a house of puzzles with the family who thought they’d get the money.

Series Status: 2 books released, 3rd and final to be released in 2022

My Status: Read 1 of 2 released

I’ll probably continue. I was really excited to get into the second book and then ended up returning it to the library unread. I’ll probably continue at some point when I’m in the mood for something different but no immediate plans.

The Brown Sisters by

Adult romance series each following a different sister.

Series Status: completed trilogy

My Status: Read 1 of 3

Series DNF’d. I’m definitely in the minority on this one but I really didn’t like this. Cringey smut and characters I hated. Not for me and I won’t be continuing.

Arc of the Scythe by Neal Shusterman

YA dystopian trilogy following scythes who kill people now that all illness and injuries have been eliminated.

Series Status: completed trilogy

My Status: Read 1 of 3

I’ll probably continue. I loved this book and then never got to the next one. I still plan to continue but we’ll see if I ever get there, it’s been a while.

The Drowning Empire by Andrea Stewart

Adult fantasy series following an empire run by bone shard magic where island are mysteriously sinking.

Series Status: 2 books released, 3rd and final to be released in 2022

My Status: Read 2 of 2 released

I’ll probably continue. I really like this world but the books have too many POVs. I’ll probably continue at this point but I’m not in the huge rush.

Every Day by David Levithan

YA trilogy about a guy who wakes up in a different body every day.

Series Status: completed trilogy

My Status: Read 1 of 3

Series DNF’d. This is a cool idea but man, I was bored and won’t be continuing

Captive Prince by CS Pacat

Adult fantasy series following a prince who is forced to be a pleasure slave.

Series Status: completed trilogy

My Status: Read 1 o 3

I plan to continue. The plot was a little slow but I’ve heard it gets better. Also one of the few series I actually own since I got them as a gift. So I will keep reading at some point.

Remembrance of Earth’s Past by Cixin Liu

Adult sci-fi first contact trilogy originally published in Chinese.

Series Status: completed trilogy

My Status: Read 1 of 3

I plan to continue. I was really surprised how much I liked this science heavy translated book. I’m still a little scared to continue, they’re intimidating but I have the second book in hand from the library and plan to pick it up soon.

The Colours of Madeleine by Jaclyn Moriarty

Adult fantasy series about odd people (yep, that’s the best I can do).

Series Status: completed trilogy

My Status: DNF’d book 1

Series DNF’d. Oh boy, this was bad and had no plot.

Meant to Be by Multiple Authors

Adult romance series of Disney princess retellings, each book by a different author.

Series Status: 1 book released, 3rd to be released in 2022, unknown series length

My Status: Read 1 of 1 released

I can’t wait to continue. This first book of a Cinderella rom-com was delightful and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next one with will be Beauty and the Beast by Jasmine Guillory.

Earthsea Cycle by Ursula K Le Guin

Adult/YA classic fantasy series.

Series Status: completed 6 book series

My Status: Read 2 of 6

I might continue. I really liked the first book but didn’t really like the second. I think I might be done but I might change my mind.

Saga by Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples

Adult graphic novel fantasy series following a couple from rival races who are on the run with their daughter.

Series Status: 9 books released, 14 books total expected

My Status: Read 3 of 9 released

I plan to continue. These are really fun, I have the 4th one on my shelf.

Heartstopper by Alice Oseman

YA graphic novel series following two gay boys falling in love.

Series Status: 4 books released, 5th and final to be released in 2022

My Status: Read 3 of 4 released

I can’t wait to continue. These books are adorable. I will read the 4th one just as soon as I can get my hands on it.

Legendborn by Tracy Deonn

YA urban fantasy based in King Arthur mythology.

Series Status: 1 book released, 2nd to be released in 2022, unknown series length

My Status: Read 1 of 1released

Series DNF’d. I heard great things about this series but it just didn’t work for me and I won’t be continuing.

This Poison Heart by Kalynn Bayron

YA fantasy series about a girl who can make plants grow.

Series Status: 1 book released, 2nd to be released in 2022, unknown series length

My Status: Read 1 of 1 released

Series DNF’d. I was really excited about this because I loved Cinderella is Dead by Bayron but I just didn’t like it. The plot was boring and then the ending was rushed. I’ll probably read what Bayron does next but not in this series.

Meet Me at the Summit by Mandi Lynn

YA contemporary following a girl who takes a road trip as she grieves the loss of both of her parents.

Series Status: 1 book released, unknown series length

My Status: Read 1 of 1 released

I plan to continue. I didn’t know this was a series until the end of the book and Goodreads still doesn’t list it that way but the book said there’d be more and I really enjoyed this first one.

Supernatural Investigations by BB Alston

Middle grade fantasy series about a girl who following her brother’s disappearance goes to train at the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs.

Series Status: 1 book released, 2nd to be released in 2022, unknown series length

My Status: Read 1 of 1 released

I can’t wait to continue. One of my favorite books of the year, I loved this and can’t wait for the 2nd book to be released.

Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim

Asian-inspired YA fantasy series retelling of the six swans fairy tale.

Series Status: 1 book released, 2nd to be released in 2022, unknown series length

My Status: Read 1 of 1 released

Series DNF’d. This was ok but I don’t plan to continue. A couple of the fantasy elements were just poorly done and seemed a little silly, it kept taking me out of the story.

Crusaderverse by Aminah Fox

Adult sci-fi series (again, that’s all I’ve got).

Series Status: 1 book released, unknown series length

My Status: Read 1 of 1 released

Series DNF’d. This was the worst book I read in 2021, I hated it.

Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao

Chinese-inspired YA sci-fi series inspired following a young girl who is sent to be a concubine pilot of a giant transforming robot.

Series Status: 1 book released, unknown series length

My Status: Read 1 of 1 released

I can’t wait to continue. Another one of my favorite books of the year, I can’t wait to read the next one and sadly, still no publication date.

Chai Masala Club by Annika Sharma

Adult contemporary romance series each following a member of a friend group in NYC.

Series Status: 1 book released, unknown series length

My Status: Read 1 of 1 released

Series DNF’d. This book still makes me mad, I will not be continuing.

Monk and Robot by Becky Chambers

Sci-fi novella series in a world where robots gained consciousness and were set free.

Series Status: 1 book released, 2nd to be released in 2022, unknown series length

My Status: Read 1 of 1 released

I plan to continue. This was super cute and made me think, I’ll pick up the next one when it’s available.

All of Us Villains by Amanda Foody and Christine Lynn Herman

YA fantasy with a Hunger Games like competition between kids from magical families.

Series Status: 1 book released, 2nd to be released in 2022, unknown series length

My Status: Read 1 of 1 released

Series DNF’d. I didn’t hate this but it had too many POVs and after I got into in the middle, the ending took a turn that I really didn’t like and I don’t care to see how that turns out.

The Last Binding by Freya Marske

Adult fantasy series set in early 1900s England following a gay man who learns about the hidden magicians and is tasked with keeping them hidden.

Series Status: 1 book released, 2nd to be released in 2022, unknown series length

My Status: Read 1 of 1 released

I plan to continue. This book was a lot of fun and I look forward to continuing.

Clashing Skies by Shina Reynolds

YA fantasy series with soldiers on winged horses to protect the realm.

Series Status: 1 book released, unknown series length

My Status: Read 1 of 1 released

I plan to continue. This was very typical YA fantasy but it sure was fun. I plan to pick up the next one when it is eventually released.

The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells

Adult sci-fi novella series following a Murderbot who has gained awareness.

Series Status: 6 books released, 9 planned books

My Status: Read 1 of 6 released

Series DNF’d. This was not what I thought it was going to be, I was hoping it would be funny or at least fun to read. I’m not interested in continuing.

Spellslinger by Sebastien de Castel

Adult fantasy series following a young man who’s magic is fading who meets a mysterious woman.

Series Status: completed series of 6 books

My Status: Read 1 of 6

I will continue. I really enjoyed the first book that I read in December and I have the 2nd book ready to start soon.

A Stitch in Time by Kelley Armstrong

Adult series featuring romance, time travel, ghosts and mysteries.

Series Status: 2 books released, 3rd to be released in 2022, unknown series length

My Status: Read 1 of 2 released

I can’t wait to continue. I loved this book and I’m still thinking about it. The second one was released in October and my library has it on order. I’ll be digging into it as soon as I can get my hands on it.

Wow, that’s a long list! Kudos to anyone who made it this far. I’ll be curious to revisit this list next year and see if I actually continue the series I plan to.
