Monthly NetGalley Updates, Reading Updates

NetGalley Update – December 2021

A couple days late but here is my mid-month update on my NetGalley ARCs.

Stats

  • Approved ARCs:33
  • Feedback Sent: 25
  • Feedback Ratio: 76%

I’m closing in on the 80% mark. I won’t make it by the end of the year as planned since I don’t plan to read any more ARCs but definitely in early 2022.

Books Read Since Last Update

I have read 3 ARCs since my last update. A good number for me but sadly, the ratings have been pretty low.

The Bone Shard Emperor by Andrea Stewart (was published November 23, reviewed November 21)

I was so excited about this sequel and really hoped the story had finally started moving but I was disappointed with another slow plot and too many points of view. It’s so frustrating, there’s a great world in here but the execution is just bad. I ended up giving it 2.5 stars, you can read my full review here.

Old Music for New People by David Biddle (was published December 7, reviewed November 28)

Oh boy, this contemporary YA with trans rep was just bad. There’s some good stuff but so much of it makes no sense or is just barely skimming the surface. The rep also seems to be not very good although I can’t speak to that first hand. I ended up giving it 2 stars, you can read my full review here.

The Last She by HJ Nelson (was published December 7, reviewed December 5)

I received this ARC months ago and as it has waited on my ARC list, I’ve gotten more and more excited. Well, it was a big letdown. I think part of the issue may have been that it started on Wattpad. My main complaint about this one is that it jumped to the middle of the story. It’s a standalone and read like the middle of a trilogy. I didn’t dislike it but I finished it 2.5 weeks ago and barely remember it. I gave it 3 stars, you can see my full review here.

Approvals Since Last Update

I haven’t really requested any ARCs lately as I close in on the 80% and I’m afraid I’ll mess it up, but one older request was approved, A Magic Steeped in Poison by Judy I. Lin. This cover is beautiful and I love tea, it was an easy request the book with a magical tea-making competition. It isn’t set to be published until late March so I have plenty of time and will pick it up some time over the next few months.

Current NetGalley Shelf

I currently have 8 books sitting on my NetGalley shelf. Most of these are coming out in the next two months so I better start requesting some spring releases.

  • When You Get the Chance by Emma Lord (January 4, 2022)
  • The Beholden by Cassandra Rose Clarke (January 18, 2022)
  • Castles in Their Bones by Laura Sebastian (February 1, 2022)
  • The Gaps by Leanne Hall (February 8, 2022)
  • Bright Ruined Things by Samantha Cohoe (February 15, 2022)
  • The Rumor Game by Dhionelle Clayton and Sona Charaipotra (March 1, 2022)
  • Tell Me an Ending by Jo Harkin (March 1, 2022)
  • A Magic Steeped in Poison by Judy I Lin (March 29, 2022)

  1. Wow! I hope you reach that 80% mark soon! I currently have read 75 out of the 83 books I’ve been approved for. I actually just DNFed one backlist book that I’ve been trying to read for a while, which was a relief to finally review and get off my shelf.

My ratio is at 90% now (although I have 10 pending requests that might ruin things) and I’m hoping to get through the 8 books I still need to review in the next few months to maybe get up to a 100% read ratio for a brief period in time!
